Learning New Things
A good way to help increase your memory would be to learn new things. Learn a new language, take up gardening or even cook a fun meal. Your brain creates pathways between information. New information means new and useful pathways.
When you are learning new things and while trying to commit something to memory, try organizing your notes into related subjects, instead of random topics. You’re more likely to be able to remember this type of information when you organize it in this manner.
Sometimes your memory isn’t your problem, it’s actually a lack of attention. When you are passively listening, you aren’t giving it your full attention and your mind wanders, then information is lost. Focus your mind on the information at hand and clear other thoughts frequently. Actively think about what you are learning to form connections in your brain.
Cramming is a very poor way to study and should be avoided. To be more effective, make several study sessions to break up the information intake. Don’t try to learn it all at one time. It will almost certainly overwhelm you, and set you up for future memory failure. You can promote mental sharpness and enhanced memory by setting aside regular study sessions.
Write sticky notes to help yourself remember to complete tasks. Place them in areas you look at often, like next to a cell phone or computer. These sticky notes can help you avoid forgetting things that are important.
Learning is a Continuous Process
Continuous learning is key, even if your days as a student are long behind you. If you let your knowledge base stagnate, you are not exercising the brain regions that form new memories. You may have difficulty remembering things if you don’t exercise this part of your brain.
Have you ever drawn a blank in mid-sentence? Learn to accept that memory loss happens to everyone. Calm yourself, and your mind, and then focus on zoning in on the word by thinking about related words or memories. Usually by doing so will cause the missing word to come to the forefront of your mind as well.
If this is happening, take around a five or fifteen minute break every hour when working or studying, so that your mind can relax and rest. Once you resume your task, your brain will be alert and ready to go.
Positive Thoughts Today
Record your thoughts in a notebook. Write down five or more things that you are grateful for every day. You could also write five positives that occurred that day. Writing down these thoughts feels good, and when you are in good spirits, your brain actually processes things more efficiently, improving your memory.
By getting physical exercise, you are greatly increasing your mental capacity. By treating your body well, it will enhance your brain’s ability to remember and then process information. By exercising you’ll promote more oxygen flow to your brain. This will help prevent medical conditions that negatively effect memory. Exercise helps activate brain chemicals that protect your brain cells.
To improve your memory, try to put on classical music if you are able to. In general, music that is soothing will assist in bringing you to a more relaxed state, resulting in better memory. So try some classical music the next time you are taking a relaxing bath, and maybe light some candles as well.
Memory Loss and Aging
Gradual memory loss is a normal part of our natural process of aging. If you use the tips that you have read in this article, you should have the ability and knowledge to better handle memory loss.
Learning and Memory – An Integrated Approach by John R. Anderson
From one of the leading researchers in the field of human memory comes the new edition of a truly integrative perspective on learning and memory! Rather than forge a simple synthesis, Anderson integrates learning research on animals and memory research on humans without distorting the character of either one. The result is a more complete picture of learning, including material on skill acquisition, inductive learning, and applications to education. Get your copy Here.
